Another month, another podcast and yet another absolute blinder. For our 16th podcast, we hand over the reigns to one of the disco-edit scene’s most accomplished and consistent contributors – BEATEN SPACE PROBE.
Beaten Space Probe is the moniker of Shota Tanaka, a 30 year old Tokyo native who spends his weekdays working in an office and his weekends crate digging and holding down no less than four residencies throughout the city (LOOP in Aoyama, BAR JAM in Ebisu, KOARA in Shibuya and A971 in Roppongi – with another new one at SECO in Shibuya starting this October).
“I started DJing over 10 years ago,” Shota told us, “playing mainly house to be honest. Disco music has been always been a passion of mine though, and more recently I prefer to play a blend of deep house and disco.”
And it’s with his own edits that Shota is blazing a trail. With releases on
Chopshop Music,
Touchsoul Music,
ISM Records and possibly upcoming on
Disco Deviance, Beaten Space Probe works tend to tread the simple, respectful furrow, Shota’s talent shining through in his immaculate selection of songs, and their careful re-arrangement.
“In Tokyo there are some really nice second hand record shops – I often go there and dig for nice music which I wanna play in my sets. After I get them, I record them carefully and start editing. Previously I used Ableton to make re-edits but after a recommendation from an edit meister friend, I’m now using Logic. Basically I change up the arrangement, add some beats and loops on, and thoroughly road test them!”
Shota has also recently released his first batch of official edits on his own new imprint. “BSP the label, is primarily gonna be a home for my own edits. I’m not sure whether I’ll keep this way or not though – let’s see what happens! There are two more scheduled releases for the label in 2012, and they’ll both be more of my own edits.”
And this podcast is a proper beaut, folks. We’ve listened to literally nothing else for the past few weeks. “Wow, thank you! The mix itself came naturally. There’s some nice new promos in there from labels such as ISM and File Under Disco and this mix represents what I’m doing at the clubs. Starting with the slower bpms and pitched up gradually while mixing boogie disco and deep house. I had so much fun making this mix and I hope everyone likes it as well :)”
“Oh yeah – I’m planning to visit UK this year so if anybody reading would like me to come and play a few tunes, just let me know!! ;)”
Be sure and connect with Shota on his SOUNDCLOUD, FACEBOOK or on RA. First though, dive right on in to this wonderful hour of disco & boogie vibes.

The EP starts with the label’s very own The Dead Rose Music Company’s discofied house track ‘Pursuit Of Love’, a bit faster loopy house track with heavy bottoms. Then followed by Tomas Malo ‘s ‘Outer Funk’ and Lex Wolf , new name for me, production ‘You See Im Ready’, another killer boogie disco house tracks. And the last track of the EP is SE62 ‘s ‘Sweet Memories’, a track with true party vibe.
