Asha Puthli | Space Talk

The magnificent Deep Space Orchestra played for us on Saturday past, the first in a series of NiTE JAMS gigs we’re running with our Twitch buddies. It’s a mighty fine concept, even if we do say so our damn selves – we invite one guest to play two different sets, a disco one alongside yours truly, and then a more peak time heads down effort with Twitch.

Anyways DSO’s Chris (and Si as well I suppose..) but Chris in particular played an incredible set of old disco and funk tracks, super rare 7″s and lots of long forgotten gems. It was just an immaculate set, a proper highlight of our year thus far and this lil beaut from Asha Puthli’s 1976 LP The Devil Is Loose was one of the selections he played.

The song has, of course, been edited & sampled to within an inch of its life, but nothing can improve on perfection and the million edits kicking around really wind me up for some reason. The one we’ll let slide, and only cos it’s such a different take on things, is this awesome Luv Unlimited Vibes effort, more uptempo in its groove but still super atmospheric. Suuuuperb.

North Pollard | Yes, Let’s

If there’s a more consistent label around than Audio Parallax, or a harder working boss than its honcho David Kenney, I’d love to know. This EP by Aussie North Pollard is the labels 36th release in a couple of short years, and of the incredible standard we’ve come to expect as the norm.

Nothing too intricate about this particular track, adding weight to the theory that if you get a couple of vital things nailed, you have a beast on your hands. This is all about the soft bassline and sleazy tempo, early evening perfection right here.

Edit-arama!

We’ve been a bit quiet on the blog front for the last while. With excuses ranging  from broken laptops, being homeless for a few weeks, or just being Skef, we haven’t had the chance to post up as much as we would like to, but we have been busy! Make sure to stay tuned for the next in our exclusive podcast mix series coming this week, with a few more belters lined up over the next while.

In the meantime, there has been so many great edits floating about, so here are just a few rocking our boat at the minute. Some great ones for those summer time parties!

First up is Touchsoul‘s sublime Maxwell edit. Make sure to check out their Soundcloud for limited downloads of their edits, and be quick as they are usually gone in minutes!

Maxwell – Ascension (Touchsoul Lover’s Only Edit)

Next up is Matthew Kyle’s sublime edit of Bobby Womack. You know what sort of groove to expect by now, and this doesn’t fail to deliver

Nobody Wants You When You’re Down and Out (Matthew Kyle Edit)

Then we have a cracking edit from Daniel Swainger. Many more of these on his Soundcloud

‘You keep making me hot’ Busta Jones (danimalswainger Edit)

Next up, from Drop Out Orchestra, a blissful edit of Sade’s classic (even better than Shola Ama’s!)

Drop_Out_Orchestra_-_The_Swedish_Taboo

Any finally we have a brilliant edit of Jennifer Hudson from the legendary Mark Seven. We were pointed to this one by Mike from Belfast Music Club, who are bringing Mark over this summer. Looking forward to that!

Don’t Look Down (Mark Seven Tape Edit)

Enjoy!

Loleatta Holloway | (November 5, 1946 — March 21, 2011)

Sad news this week when we learned of the passing of Loleatta Holloway.

A proper, proper legend and arguably one of the greatest divas in the disco era, Loleatta will certainly be remembered as one of the most sampled voices in dance music. From working with the Salsoul Orchestra to being sampled by Black Box, you’re sure to recognise one of the greatest female singers of the last 40 years in some form.

Here’s a couple of selections in tribute:

Chocolate Sensation

Loleatta Holloway – Hit and Run (The Noodleman Dub)

Loleatta_Holloway_-_Dreamin_(Pol_On_Edit)

Duff Disco – Fame

As previously mentioned on our post on Duff Disco’s new release Catch Me Out/You Wish, Jeremy planned to give away the previous Duff Disco releases as free limited downloads. And he seems to be a man of us word, as the first Duff Disco release of his edit of David Bowie’s ‘Fame is now available on the excellent Join The Dots blog.

So, just follow the link right here, and sign up to get the free mp3, and access to other goodies from the team.

And don’t forget to check out the new release on Juno tomorrow

DUFFDISCO005 | CATCH ME OUT / YOU WISH

Aah Yes, ain’t that Fresh…………

The brilliant Jeremy Duffy has stepped behind his Duff Disco moniker to provide the next in the Duff Disco edit series 005 – Catch Me Out/You Wish.

These were uploaded on his Soundcloud a few months back, and have been causing quite a stir, with many people (including ourselves) itching for a release date. Well, that finally happens this Monday 7th March with a limited edition vinyl only release which will be available through Juno, and Piccadilly.

Two heavy, slo-mo bombs, perfect for the upcoming summer months, we’re looking foward to picking this up next week and playing out.

You Wish takes a cheeky sample from the old school hip hop joint by Skee-Lo, and just keeps the groove going.

The filp side has the cracking Catch Me Out, which is sure to get the dancefloor rocking

Get it while you can! Also keep an eye out on Duff’s own Join The Dots blog, where in the coming weeks he will be giving away past Duff Disco releases on mp3 for FREE! What a guy!
