Larry Levan | Live from Paradise Garage, 1979

Ok, how’s about the coolest post we’ve ever made. And quite possibly the coolest post made on any blog, ever! Here for posterity and for disco fans around the world, is an immaculate recording from the 2nd anniversary of the Paradise Garage in 1979.

We have saved these as three different parts.. (intro) is an hour long discussion about how the recording came to being with the details of how Lenny Fontana recorded a live radio broadcast on his father’s reel to reel machine, and then transferred it to DAT in the early 1990′s. It’s is a cool listen, and well worth checking out. Background soundtrack to the chat is tracklisted below.

Loleatta Holloway | Love Sensation

Surely one of the greatest releases on one of the most important record labels of all time. We’ll never ever tire of listening to or playing this one, and to our absolute and utter delight it was a very random and welcome request at a recent gig we played. Massive respect to the requester with impeccable taste!

Sadly of course, Loleatta passed away earlier this year leaving a musical legacy that will last forever and a day. Here’s a cool obituary piece the Guardian published.

Loleatta is synonymous with the mighty Salsoul Orchestra the epic house band of the legendary Salsoul Records, a record label that’s at the heart of everything we love about disco music. We’ll not wax lyrical too much about Salsoul, the waxing has been done a hundred times better by a hundred other voices a hundred times louder and better than ours, but do have a read at this cracking piece over on DJ History.

Salsoul compilations are also bordering on the countless but we recently picked up the only one you’ll possibly ever need. Lovingly compiled by afficionado Ian Dewhirst, The Definitive Salsoul Mixes is a 3cd chronological selection of key mixes and milestone release spanning the label’s lifetime, all presented as brilliantly mastered full-length unmixed 12″ versions. For uber disco-geeks like us, Ian’s sleeve notes and accompanying booklet are just as brilliant.

Quite conscious that A) we face getting misty eyed here and B) this may sound like a fricken press release if we go on any more, so we’ll quit while we’re ahead! The comp is out this week, and super worthy of your attention. Check Piccadilly, Amazon or your favourite independent stockist.

Get Down Edits | Vol.1 (digital)

It’s been great to see our Irish disco brothers Darren Daz Dalton and Martin Roche finally getting a bit of nationwide acclaim. Promoting the disco vibes around the southern tip of Ireland for well over a decade the guys have hosted and played with a who’s who of the scene’s biggest hitters, garnered a formidable fanbase for their own legendary DJ sets and all the while, worked up a few bits and pieces of material of their own.

In particular Daz’s re-work of Sister Sledge’s Greatest Dancer earlier this year become one of those Soundcloud phenomena. An edit so obviously great it gathers support at a rapid rate of knots, gets picked up by a big name DJ, and the overwhelming pressure to release bears fruit.

The result was Get Down Edits Vol 1, a super solid collection of the guys’ edits that was pressed up in limited number, and sold out in most outlets almost instantly.

Fret not though! The release is now available in digital format and Daz gave us a quick run down behind the whole project.

“It has been something we’ve been working on since late 2010 to be honest, this was around the time I got talking to the guys who pressed & distributed the vinyl. All the edits that featured on the wax were finished before this time besides one (Far Beyond) which was done to complete the release. I had been working on these re-edits without any idea or aspiration that they would be pressed to vinyl and released to be honest.”

“The compilation has primarily been an opportunity for me to get some of my edits pressed to vinyl & distributed to some major record & online stores but it could also definitely be an opportunity to act as a platform or home for other peoples work too”

“The Sister Sledge edit certainly had a big part to play in the whole thing. I was finishing off edits, uploading them to soundcloud and sending them out to DJs I had got to know from having them over to play at our Get Down party. It gathered good feedback on Soundcloud but then Greg Wilson mailed me saying it was really working for him and that I should try to get it released. Greg set me up with the guys who pressed & distributed the vinyl. So yeah it’s basically its all down to Greg Wilson! He’s a true gentleman and really helped us out a lot. Having been a big fan of his for a long time now i was delighted that he had seen some potential in what I was doing.”

“The Get Down Edits Vol 1 vinyl went really well & I was delighted with some nice feedback. I’d like to thanks everyone that supported it and fingers crossed that we can come up with a vol 2!”

We posted up a link to the guys’ recent excellent Get Down mix, properly worthy of doing so again..

And you can snap up Get Down Edits Vol1 from Juno DL, or your other favourite retailer.
